The 2018 Irish Memorial Ceremony
Five fearless 69th lads faced threatening rain storms and short notice to journey to
center city Philadelphia at noon on Sunday December 16th to assist in the placement of
a new stand of colors at the Irish Memorial. The 69th has been instrumental for many
years in supporting the monument at Penn's Landing along the Delaware River. Captain
Scott Eller was joined by Sergeant Bill Meehan and Privates Dave Ashcroft, Joe
Donnelly Jr and Joe Donnelly Sr. represented proudly the regiment at the event.
The Monument
The monumental bronze is designed as a dynamic arc filled with
movement. Approximately 12 feet high, 30 feet long, and 12 feet wide, the
sculpture rests on a granite plinth 2 feet high and has the basic profile of a
large wedge. The design suggests the multitudes with 35 life-size bronze
figures arranged in clusters of vignettes.
